The Turks, after whom the stone is named, attached Turquoise to their horses bridles for protection. The Native Americans believed the stone to be 'the breath of life', symbolising the sky and reminding humans of their spirituality. Lapis Lazuli
This stone often contains golden flecks of pyrite (iron sulphide). These golden flecks on the deep blue matrix of the stone resemble a clear star studded sky and thus the stone was known as 'The Night Stone'. Its rich blue colour made it a favourite with royalty. Lapis alleviates depression, relieves heart and spleen problems. A lovely delicate stone the deserves care from its wearer, as it is sensitive to hot water and cosmetics.
