Two Turquoise gemstones hand set in silver with lovely wide shanks.

Turquoise is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminium, a combination which creates the beautiful bright blue/green hues characteristic of the stone. It is formed when copper rich solutions percolate into pre-existing rocks. The water content evaporates, the copper combines with aluminium and phosphorous to form Turquoise. Often a patchwork of the original host rock remains within the Turquoise, providing a uniqueness to each stone. It was believed that the blue and brown within the gemstone symbolised the unity of the earth and sky.

The name Turquoise originated from the 13th century when it was introduced to Europe by Venetian merchants, who called it "pierre turquois" or Turkkiss stone to suggest its origin. Most of the major ancient civilizations believed Turquoise to have potent healing and spiritual powers. It was also used as an amulet for protection especially by the peoples of the Americas. It was attached to arrows , horse saddles and other artefacts to assist with protection.

Turquoise is thought to attract good luck and friendships, instill calm and alleviate depressions. It is the birthstone for Sagittarius and Aquarius.
