Lapis Lazuli is a complex mixture of the minerals Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite. The best quality being a deep intense blue with tiny specks of iron pyrites which is a golden brassy colour. These inclusions add to the uniqueness of each gemstone. It was formed as the result of contact metamorphism when pre existing limestone and marble rocks were changed by the intense heat and pressure of intruding magmas.  

Lapis Lazuli was revered by many ancient cultures and was used to create ultramarine colour fabric dye favoured  by royalty. In Tibetan culture Lapis Lazuli is associated with spiritual attainment, wisdom and truth . The Egyptians believed wearing Lapis would ensure immortality. Cleopatra's iconic blue eye shadow was originally the dust of Lapis Lazuli stones..
