Lapis Lazuli is a complex mixture of the minerals Lazurite, Calcite and Pyrite. The best quality being a deep intense blue with tiny specks of golden pyrites .It was formed as the result of contact metamorphism when pre existing limestone and marble rocks were changed by the intense heat and pressure of intruding magmas. 

Lapis Lazuli was used to create ultramarine colour fabric dye favoured  by royalty. In Tibetan culture Lapis Lazuli is associated with spiritual attainment, wisdom and truth . The Egyptians believed wearing Lapis would ensure immortality.  Cleopatra's blue eye shadow was  the dust of Lapis Lazuli. Leonardo da Vinci used Lapis Lazuli to create vibrant blue pigments .
