Amber ...The Gold of the North !
Amber is the fossilised resin of ancient evergreen trees existing over 44 million years ago. Resin is extruded by trees as a form of protection . Once the trees fell to the forest floor they were slowly covered by sediments . The heat and pressure created by the weight of these material caused the Amber to oxidise and the process of molecular polymerization created beautiful Amber.
Amber occurs in several colours beige, brown, blue, green and red. The colour iis the result of the environmental conditions present during formation. For example marshy conditions result in green Amber. Sometimes as the resin seeped out of the trees insects, foliage and even droplets of water were encasulated within the substance. These inclusions now give us a fascinating insight into ancient life and created the inspiration for the Jurassic Park films.
Ancients Romans thought Amber was the gemstone of life and fertility so was often worn by young couples. In Norse legend Amber is linked to Freya the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Ancient Baltic tribes believed Amber had spiritual and protective qualities. Chinese legends call Amber "the Soul of the Tiger" being able to ward off evil and bring protection. The enduring presence of Amber in all cultures exibits is universal appeal.
Amber is still thought to be a powerful cleanser of body and mind . It is used as a healing cream and is drunk as a tincture . The presence of succinic acid in amber gives it anti inflammatory qualities
