A birthstone for September and Virgo, born between 24th August and 23rd September, is Jasper.
Jasper can be found all over the world, and its name comes from the Greek for 'spotted stone'. There are many varieties of jasper, which are usually named after either the location they were discovered, or the particular appearance. These include the black and white spotted Dalmatian jasper and the yellow and brown Leopardskin jasper. The different colours are caused by the various minerals included- for example, a red colour indicates the presence of iron. Due to these variations, every piece of jasper is unique.
Jasper is said to reduce stress and provide a calming influence. It is also believed to aid healing. The Ancient Egyptians carved jasper into amulets which were buried with the dead to assist with the journey to the afterlife.
